Most task apps want to be your workspace. They open in a window, hold your attention, and ask to be organized. But a to-do list isn't a place you work — it's a thing you glance at. The better it is, the less time you spend inside it.
So Todai lives in the menu bar with no Dock icon. It appears when your pointer rests in a corner of the screen, and hides when you move away. Adding a task is one global shortcut from anywhere. Today's list stays short because everything that isn't for today waits in Backlog. Finished tasks sweep themselves away overnight.
Then the list stopped being only mine. AI coding agents were doing real work in my repositories, and they needed the same thing I did: a shared board showing what's next, what's claimed, and what's done.
So Todai grew a local MCP server. Agents read the board, claim tasks, and report back. Dispatch a task straight from the composer, require a plan before any code is touched, and review every run before accepting. The list stays quiet while the work moves forward.
Todai is a native SwiftUI app — no web wrapper, no Electron shell. Your tasks live on your Mac first; signing in with email syncs them across devices. The iPhone companion is free (early access soon), with a widget and share-sheet capture, because a list you can't glance at on the go isn't much of a list.
It's built by one person, and it shows in the good way: every feature exists because it was needed, and everything else was left out.
